Our Eatery Page  McCracken's Co 1st NY and what they ate, and what we consume at our 21st century Reenactments

A Place to share recipes and the joys and sorrows of food and spirits:

Our soldiers were given one pound of Bread or Flour 1/2 Pound of Meat, (Salted Beef,  Pork, or native Hudson River Shad fish) 1/2 cup of dried Beans or Peas per man per day.

These ingredients were commonly cooked together in a tin copper kettle by six men together to form a stew and they had but the one meal per day.

Each man was to be issued a gill or half gill of rum per day to mix with the water to make it potable.

Shortages of food and other supplies were often the case and men were not always enjoying the best stores set aside for their use by the public. Often much food was lost to the elements as it was packed in barrels and followed the troops as they marched.
